What Health Problems Are Caused By Obesity?

Obesity is a growing problem in both America and the UK. Lack of exercise combined with large portions of food are creating a major health risk. You have a greater risk of developing illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease as well as cancer and arthritis.
If you are obese you also have a greater chance of developing high blood pressure which could result in a stroke.
Eating a diet high in saturated fats found in a lot of processed foods as well as butter, cream and red meat will lead to an increase in blood cholesterol. This in turn can clog up arteries and lead to heart disease.
Carrying around excess weight will also put a strain on your heart and lead to shortness of breath. Tiredness and sluggishness are other side effects of being very overweight. Apart from looking unattractive being obese can shorten your life.
It’s very important to get your blood sugar levels checked if you are overweight as you can stop the onset of type 2 diabetes before it starts. This is the most common type of diabetes associated with obesity. A program of daily exercise and a change in your diet can soon stabilise your blood sugar and prevent diabetes from developing.
If you are obese and experience symptoms such as the need to urinate frequently and a sudden increase in thirst you should visit your doctor immediately as these are the first signs that you are developing diabetes.
Liver disease as well as being associated with heavy drinking can also be caused by insulin resistance. This is much more likely among obese people and there have been studies that have linked body mass index to the degree of liver damage. The higher the BMI the greater likelyhood of developing problems with the liver.
Gallstones are another health problem associated with obesity and can be linked to a rapid increase in BMI or the body mass index. Sleep apnea which could prove fatal is yet another condition linked to obesity.
This is a condition that causes the sufferer to stop breathing during sleep for up to one minute. It causes frequent interruptions in sleep as the sufferer is woken up. This is caused by excess tissue in the throat and neck which flops down into the throat blocking the muscles relax during sleep.
If you are overweight you have a much greater chance of developing health problems, however it’s never to late to reduce that risk by losing weight. Even losing a few pounds can make all the difference.
Start today by taking some gentle exercise and cutting back on fatty processed foods. If you haven’t exercised for a while and suffer shortness of breath consult your doctor first.
Losing weight doesn’t mean going hungry you just need to alter your diet replacing unhealthy fatty foods that have poor nutritional quality with healthy nutritious foods that are high in fibre.
Keep sweets and sugary snacks as occasional treats. Don’t deny yourself your favourite foods completely otherwise you may find that your diet plan doesn’t last very long!
